Do you owe past due taxes? Are you lost on where to start? WE all know it is extremely frustrating trying to contact the IRS. It’s actually quite maddening! Even for us tax professionals. The good news is the IRS is making it easier for taxpayers to gain access to their tax information.
Follow these simple steps to do your own tax compliance check.
Create an IRS.gov online account.
Pull all Account transcripts starting with the oldest tax debt you owe.
You will need to know when your tax debt expires. CSED Date.
Two ways to figure this out.
Call the IRS and ask what the CSED date is.
Look at the date on the account transcript. The date of assessment, Count ten years out from that date. This will be a rough estimate as to when your tax debt will expire.
There are key things to look for when reviewing your account transcripts. Look for any tax liens that may have been filed. Sometimes the IRS may file a tax lien if you owe over $20k in back taxes. Look for passport restrictions on the account transcripts. Usually this will happen if you again owe a lot to the IRS.
Once you have the above information you or a third party (like us), can help you determine the best course of action to tackle and resolve and or manage the IRS tax debt.
