Claiming a Tax Refund

Updated: Feb 7

As we approach the end of the year and the holiday season. Many of us will push off filing past due taxes. If you have not filed the federal taxes for 2020 and are due a refund you will only have until April 15th 2024 to claim the refund before it expires. Why?

You have three years from the date you filed the return, or two years from the date you paid the taxes, whichever is later. Once this time has passed, the IRS won’t issue your refund or apply it to other taxes you owe.

Any tax return from 2019 and older the refund has already expired.

So, what happens when I file a return and the time has expired? The refund does not get issued and does not get applied to any other tax debt. You are essentially leaving money on the table. Stop procrastinating and file any past due taxes now.

There are exceptions to the rule for some refunds to be extended beyond the 3 year rule. If you happen to live in a federal declared disaster area you may get additional time to file and also may have an additional year to claim a refund.

If you need to file past due tax returns, we are here to help. We have very attractive pricing and customize our pricing to each client's needs.

Thanks for stopping by and reading!
